Neurological Physical Therapy Can Help You Live Your Best Life

Outpatient neurological physical therapy is especially effective for individuals who are struggling to thrive in their normal day because of a neurological condition. FastBack Physical Therapy is able to help patients who are able to walk and move under their own power, or with some assistance from caregivers. Our emphasis is to improve the level of independence for our patients at home or in the community, while improving the effectiveness of the support provided by caregivers.

We have extensive experience working with people with Parkinson’s disease, and we also help with multiple other neurological conditions. Here are some of the ways that outpatient PT can help you better manage your neurological condition:

  • Improving balance and coordination:

PT can help individuals with movement disorders improve their balance and coordination, reducing the risk of falls and improving overall mobility.

  • Strengthening muscle groups:

PT can help individuals with movement disorders build strength in specific muscle groups that may be affected by their disorder, such as the arms, legs, and core muscles.

  • Increasing flexibility:

PT can help improve flexibility, which is essential for individuals with movement disorders who may struggle with rigid or restricted movements.

  • Decreasing spasms and tremors:

PT can help individuals with movement disorders reduce spasms and tremors by improving muscle control and reducing tension in affected muscles.

  • Improving gait:

PT can help individuals with movement disorders improve their gait by addressing any issues with balance, coordination, and muscle control.

  • Body weight supported exercise:

Body weight supported exercise has been proven to be highly effective to improve walking distance and balance, while reducing fatigue and pain with treadmill walking. Our Pneu-Weight unweighting system also allows for functional exercise and training without the fear of losing your balance.

Outpatient neurological physical therapy can help individuals with movement disorders by improving their balance, coordination, strength, flexibility, reducing spasms, learning to perform activity despite having tremors, and improving gait. We believe in being persistent about finding each person’s highest potential in daily living. This provides hope, while learning strategies that may be effective to slow down the progression of the condition.

Neurological Conditions We Help

  • Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson's disease is a progressive condition that affects movement, causing symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, slowness of movement and difficulty with balance (each of these is known as a “motor” symptom). FastBack Physical Therapy has multiple resources for people with Parkinson’s including:

    • PWR! (Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery)
    • Rock Steady Boxing
    • Personal Training For PD
    • Unweighted Treadmill (harness system)
    • Dance for PD
    • Urban Poling
    • Early Onset Parkinson’s Support Group

Outpatient physical therapy can help individuals with Parkinson's disease manage their motor symptoms in several ways:

    1. Improving mobility: Physical therapy can help individuals with Parkinson's disease improve their mobility by targeting specific muscles and movements that may be affected by the condition.
    2. Increasing strength: Physical therapy can help individuals with Parkinson's disease increase their strength, which can improve overall function and reduce the risk of falls.
    3. Improving balance: Physical therapy can help individuals with Parkinson's disease improve their balance, which can reduce the risk of falls and improve overall mobility.
    4. Reducing the effect of tremors: Physical therapy can help individuals with Parkinson's disease reduce the effect of tremors by improving muscle control and reducing tension in affected muscles.
    5. Improving coordination: Physical therapy can help individuals with Parkinson's disease improve their coordination and dexterity, which can improve their ability to perform daily activities.
    6. Relieving pain: Physical therapy can help individuals with Parkinson's disease relieve pain, which is a common symptom of the condition.

Outpatient physical therapy can play a crucial role in managing symptoms of Parkinson's disease while helping to prevent the progression of symptoms. It can help improve mobility, strength, and balance, as well as reduce tremors, improve coordination, and relieve pain. It's important for individuals with Parkinson's disease to work closely with their physical therapist to develop an individualized treatment plan that meets their specific needs and goals.

  • CVA (Cerebrovascular Accident)/Stroke

Outpatient physical therapy can play a crucial role in the recovery process for individuals who have had a CVA (cerebrovascular accident or stroke). Here are some ways in which physical therapy can help:

    1. Improving mobility: Physical therapy can help individuals recover their mobility by working on exercises that target specific movements and muscles affected by the stroke.
    2. Increasing strength: Physical therapy can help individuals recover their strength and build muscle mass, which can improve overall function and reduce the risk of falls.
    3. Improving balance: Physical therapy can help individuals improve their balance, which can reduce the risk of falls and improve overall mobility.
    4. Improving coordination: Physical therapy can help individuals improve their coordination and dexterity, which can improve their ability to perform daily activities.
    5. Reducing spasticity: Physical therapy can help individuals reduce spasticity, which can improve their range of motion and reduce pain.

Outpatient physical therapy can play a crucial role in the recovery process for individuals who have had a CVA, even if it happened years ago. It can help improve mobility, strength, balance, and coordination, as well as reduce spasticity. It's important for individuals to work closely with their physical therapist to develop an individualized treatment plan that meets their specific needs and goals.

  • Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic condition that can cause a range of symptoms, including muscle weakness, difficulty with coordination and balance, and fatigue. Outpatient physical therapy can help individuals manage their MS symptoms in several ways:

    1. Improving mobility: Physical therapy can help individuals with MS improve their mobility by targeting specific muscles and movements that may be affected by the condition.
    2. Increasing strength: Physical therapy can help individuals with MS increase their strength, which can improve overall function and reduce the risk of falls.
    3. Improving balance: Physical therapy can help individuals with MS improve their balance, which can reduce the risk of falls and improve overall mobility.
    4. Reducing fatigue: Physical therapy can help individuals with MS reduce fatigue by improving energy efficiency and teaching energy-saving strategies.
    5. Improving coordination: Physical therapy can help individuals with MS improve their coordination and dexterity, which can improve their ability to perform daily activities.
    6. Relieving pain: Physical therapy can help individuals with MS relieve pain, which is a common symptom of the condition.

FIVE STARS! A uniformly skilled, friendly and welcoming small team of therapists. Small is important - seeing the same few persons from one meeting to the next brings continuity to treatment and better monitoring of your progress. My own situation had a very painful hamstring laid on top of the usual progressive balance and stiffness effects of Parkinson's. The first is 100% gone and the latter slowed or partially reversed. I'm glad I found this place.
